Original Broadcast Date: 12 October 1989

Phelps approaches a woman (Ruth Yaffe) with a cart selling flowers in front of a building on the street in San Francisco.

Phelps: How's business?

Woman: Eh, slow. There's no romance left in the world any more.

Phelps (taking a rose): "This bud of love, by summer's ripening breath, May prove a beauteous flower when next we meet." (He hands the woman the rose.)

Woman: Shakespeare would've died on this street corner, mister. Try the daisies.

The woman walks away. Phelps finds the player near the back of the cart. The password is 681.

Good morning, Jim. Defense Minister Ivan Savitch, operating without the consent of one of the few freely-elected prime ministers in the Baltic region, is responsible for the death and imprisonment of over 100 dissidents. Leading the fight against him is Father Thomas Vallis, a Catholic priest and fervent opposer of Savitch, who has organized workers in general strikes, and openly attacks Savitch's ruthless policies. Two days ago, a man broke into the National Museum and stole the Cross of St. Boniface. Ivan Savitch is aware that the missing cross represents a thousand years of his country's history, but he wants the cross for other reasons. He has learned that hidden inside this cross is information which proves the atrocities he has committed. Savitch believes Father Vallis knows the whereabouts of this cross. He's placed the priest in the country's most notorious prison, known as the Tower, where he has vowed to keep him until he talks or dies. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to rescue Father Thomas Vallis from the Tower prison and help him retrieve the Cross of St. Boniface. As always, should you or any of your IM Force be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This disc will self-destruct in five seconds. Good luck, Jim.

Phelps closes the player and leaves. Smoke billows from the machine.
